Spirit Day- Support LGBT Youth

Put on something purple. Change your facebook, twitter profiles to purple. Decorate your home with purple and support LGBT youth against bullying.

Millions of Americans wear purple on Spirit Day as a sign of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth and to speak out against bullying. Spirit Day was started in 2010 by teenager Brittany McMillan as a response to the young people who had taken their own lives. Observed annually on October 20, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals and celebrities wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag. Getting involved is easy -- participants are asked to simply "go purple" on October 20 as we work to create a world in which LGBT teens are celebrated and accepted for who they are.

Thug!

Thug, Thug, Thug, Thug. I can't count how many times when I've met or talk to someone new, who happens to be attracted to black men almost exclusively, are just looking for a Thug. Where is my due rag, my bling around my neck, my pants down to my ankles. Oh yeah, I better not forget I need to be on the down low. Bring my ghettoness on!

Why all of a sudden that every black gay guy needs to reflect a imagine of being a Thug for them to be considered black enough in the gay community? Coming out in downtown Toronto many years ago, I struggle to find imagines of gay men of dark complexion in the mainstream gay publications that reflected them as being hot. Now I find several dark skin men in the mainstream publications. But almost 99% of them reflect that Thug imaginary.

I can definitely understand the bad boy appeal. Regardless of what ethnic background, we all have the fantasy of the guy that comes from the wrong side of the fence. On the same note, we also see that boy next door as a imagine that is also considered hot, but for some reason not for black men.

Gay men love to have their pornographic fantasies become reality by finding that guy the has the body and the attitude that we see on porn. Unfortunately the only imaginary that you really see of black men in porn is that of the ‘Thug’. It doesn’t matter if he is shy, aggressive, top or bottom. He will be that Thug, dress top to bottom.

Don’t get me wrong. I have no issues with anyone who loves their man being the ‘Thug’ or guys that present themselves in that way. It is hot in many ways. But there is a different reality of just being the ‘thug in bed’ versus being the ‘thug in life’. Black men are hot regardless if they’re the bad boy from the other side of the fence. The sweet boy living beside your house. The top or bottom, the preppy dressing conservative liberal type, whatever. Thug isn’t the only beauty or the only thing that reflects being black. Our skin does that on its own.
If you want Thug outside of the bedroom, then go for Thug. But don’t expect or think every black men are truly a Thug inside waiting for you to release.

At Last

Don't you ever dream of meeting that special person in whom you can finally say "At Last" my dream has come along? It may seem as a fantasy for some and a reality for others, the person who embodies your ultimate love, who you can finally exhale and breathe again.

As hard as it is to believe that this is could be possible, one of my favorite classic singles that makes you day dream of love so unreal was best done by a lady called Ella James and remade recently by a brilliant artist called Cyndi Lauper. The girl, who just wanted to have fun, grew up to remake a classic love song that is soulful and excellently arrange. Take a listen to her live performance in 2007. There is only one word to describe it, Fabulous.

So as the holiday season commence and you are out there shopping for that special person in your life. Think of this song, play it in you IPod or car stereo. It will inspire you as you search for that right gift. For those who believe that love isn't possible anymore or not even sure what love is. This song will open the flood gates; clear the mind to allow you to dream of love again. Reconnecting you to what love may feel like

Clay Aiken Gay! Really Who Would of Thought......

Mr. Aiken finally decided to come out of the closet and announce to the world that he is in deed Gay. Well that is certainly ground breaking news. Not!! Who would have thought the singing Divo was a homosexual. Shocking.

Well good for you Clay who rhymes with gay... even your mother knew! I'm glad that you decided to own up to your sexuality and come out. Even though the world had cruelly dragged you out of the closet ages ago and you just kept running back in. And especially now that you are a new father. Time to show an example and state that there isn't anything wrong for being Clay, I mean Gay. Girl you know what I mean.

My question is to People Magazine. Obviously you had nothing else to talk about? Well here is some news bigger than the US economic crisis. Worth 1.5 Trillion dollars.

I'M GAY. OMG!!! Can you believe it? Having a gay blog and all... It's even shocking to me. LOL. Well media people I will take the best numeric $$$ offer for my exclusive First interview.

Gay Muslims, Victims of 'A Jihad for Love'

Interesting Article By Philip Kennicott. Please read!

Happy Ramadan to my Muslim Friends

The relationship of Ferda and Kiymet is one of the few light moments in "A Jihad for Love," Parvez Sharma's documentary about homosexuality in the Muslim world. The two Turkish women laugh and touch in public, and in a poignant scene, Kiymet meets Ferda's 80-year-old mother. The introduction goes well, and the three women sit together and joke about life and love.

This kind of normality is absent in the lives of Sharma's other characters, most of whom have had to make wrenching choices between pursuing love and remaining within the embrace of traditional societies. Payam, a gay man who fled persecution in Iran, calls his mother from a phone booth in Turkey to update her on his hope of political asylum in Canada. He can hear her weeping -- which makes him break down.

"She said she was cutting onions but I could tell she was crying," he tells his friends, who try to comfort him.

Payam shows his face in the film, which was produced by Sandi Simcha DuBowski, the director of "Trembling Before G-d," a 2001 documentary that focused on homosexuality among Orthodox Jews. Amir, another young man who fled Iran, keeps his face hidden, but we do see his lacerated back, covered in red stripes after he was lashed for being gay.

Coming Out Mid-Age

Coming out of the closet is a very emotional journey with several highs and lows. Many who have come out to their friends and family at a young age have faced many difficulties with acceptance and rejection from others. But coming out at 19 when your unmarried, no kids and truly just about to start your adult life, is far different than at the age of 40 when your whole life has been built around a image that isn't true to who you are. The stacks are higher in many ways.

Imagine being married for several years, having kids, establishing your social network around a heterosexual life (work, friends, etc). Trying to either subdue your true sexual feelings, live a double life with a secret same sex friend, having secret encounters or just denying yourself, can be an emotional burden. Imagine after all this time you decide that you will tell the truth. This almost seems a recipe for a mid-life crisis- disaster. You're not 19 anymore. Life is completely different. I know a few gentlemen who have gone through this situation and have informed me that it can be a very challenging time in ones life. But the overall result is the freedom of having a more honest life.

When I was reviewing the Google news on my blog. I read an article referring to this subject focusing on a father's coming out to his family. I thought that I would make this post to highlight the article, In the Name of the Father

Article:
When Jonathan's middle daughter gets married this year, he won't be walking her down the aisle. Jonathan's children, two girls and a boy, don't talk to him anymore. The uneasy peace brokered after Jonathan came out to his family in 2000 after 25 years of marriage, was severed nine months ago when his children found out that Jonathan had quietly wed his much younger lover.

"When my partner and I decided to get married, I didn't want to rub salt into the wound," says Jonathan. "They found out, as did my ex-wife, through mutual friends. So now I have a situation where my kids are in a real standoff that I withheld something from them. Not that they would have said, 'Good for you.'"

Despair creeps into Jonathan's voice as he wonders whether his ties to his children can ever be rehabilitated. Over the past several months, he has received letters from his adult children indicting his fathering skills, questioning his character, and asking him to stay out of their lives. "I'm basically shut out," he says.

Congratulations California- Same Sex Marriage

This is the step in the right direction.
Info courtesy of The Los Angeles Times

SAN FRANCISCO -- -- The California Supreme Court struck down the state's ban on same-sex marriage Thursday in a broadly worded decision that would invalidate virtually any law that discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation.

The 4-3 ruling declared that the state Constitution protects a fundamental "right to marry" that extends equally to same-sex couples. It tossed a highly emotional issue into the election year while opening the way for tens of thousands of gay people to wed in California, starting as early as mid-June.
The majority opinion, by Chief Justice Ronald M. George, declared that any law that discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation will from this point on be constitutionally suspect in California in the same way as laws that discriminate by race or gender, making the state's high court the first in the nation to adopt such a stringent standard.

The decision was a bold surprise from a moderately conservative, Republican-dominated court that legal scholars have long dubbed "cautious," and experts said it was likely to influence other courts around the country.

But the scope of the court's decision could be thrown into question by an initiative already heading toward the November ballot. The initiative would amend the state Constitution to prohibit same-sex unions.

Suddenly, Last Winter

I label this post under three categories for a specific reason. First it's a post talking about a movie that I'm recommending to see. Secondly, it's a movie about gay life in general with elements that affect us all. Thirdly, it's about church and politics/state.

Suddenly, Last Winter is a wonderful short documentary film showing at the Hot Docs film festival in Toronto. As a movie you were never bored, always captivated and felt the charisma of Luca and Gustav, the main characters. As a gay or lesbian you either have experience some of the same narrow-minded attitudes showcase in the film or know someone who has in their life. As a political statement the film uncovers, through the eyes of an ordinary gay couple the struggles to have a government recognize us as equals in society and how the church has such a strong influence on the minds of those who are to represent the people. If you get a chance to see it, do so. You won't be disappointed.

On a personal note, I was lucky enough to meet both Lucas and Gustav after the film showing and again meeting Luca at my partner's birthday bash. In the film you come away thinking that these two are very nice individuals. This will be confirmed once meeting them in person. With all the attention from industry insiders, traveling across the globe to promote their small budget film, meeting various people. They are humble, polite and thankful.

Film Sysnois by Chris McDonald... www.hotdoc.bside.com
Gustav and Luca are journalists, filmmakers and long-term boyfriends living a comfortable life in Rome. When right-winger Silvio Berlusconi's government is replaced by a centre-left coalition, Italians are promised a new law that would increase rights for unmarried and gay couples. Unfortunately for Gustav, Luca and millions of disenfranchised Italians, the Vatican, conservative politicians and family-values advocates don't share their more liberal views. With anti-gay sentiment running high, rallies are held, politicians are lobbied and wagons are circled. With a very light touch and a good measure of patience and humour, Gustav and Luca attempt to navigate the roadblocks, landmines and mindboggling bureaucracy standing between themselves and their equal rights. The intrepid and at times reluctant filmmakers maintain a steady pace in this study of an ancient culture in flux and a modern couple in love.

The Alpha Male

Is there such a thing as the alpha male in the gay community? Well yes. But it may seem hard to find through all that flamboyance that is generally presented. Doesn't it seem like a lot of gay men are looking for that Alpha male type. The very straight acting, very masculine, very butch take charge man. So what does it mean to be an alpha male? Well here are a few notes.

According to the author of //http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?AlphaMale

The term originating from the animal kingdom, in which some species arrange individuals into a ranked order. For example in wolves, the pack order is split into two chains of command, one chain for the male, and one for the female. At the top of each chain is the 'Alpha' animal, and at the lowest of the chain is the 'omega' animal.

The position of Alpha Male is seen as one of the most socially desirable (in wolves as well as humans) as having it enables a male to make decisions about how their social group/pack is run, to exact submission and obedience from subordinates, and generally to control things and boss others around at will. The power of the alpha male is matched only by that of the alpha female, who is just as in control as the alpha male is. Though in human society, individual ego and desire for authority often exclude the possibility of a partnership at the top. Humans seem to have a remarkable tendency for aggregating ultimate authority to one.
So are you an Alpha Male?

Old School Love

Recently I was on my friend's blog http://www.broadviewlights.blogspot.com/ and his recent post was discussing the top 50 list of the gayest favorite songs outside of North America. He featured an old artist, Belinda Carlisle as his youtube clip. I started to view the clip and it brought me back to old memory lane. Back in the days when life seem so simple and crushes were so innocent. It made me think if it was possible to feel that same type of affection for another person as an informed, experience adult. Was it possible to still develop that innocent crush for someone that made you feel Mad About them (You). I think it's still possible!!
