Recently in the news we heard about Conservative MP Tom Lukiwski anti-gay comments caught on tape 17 years ago. Some may argue that it was so long ago and that people change over time, so why be overly concern about it now. Yes it’s true that some people do change over time. New experiences, such as getting a better exposure to the subject matter giving them a deeper understanding, person experience, etc. But has Tim truly change. Tim Lukiwski himself, who apologized for the comments, indicated that his views then were misguided and not reflective of his opinion now. But only three years ago he expressed his bigot views in Ottawa when the topic of same-sex marriage came up. Here are some of his comments that he made, courtesy of the Canadian Press. "I firmly believe that by passing this legislation, we start on a very slippery slope which could affect societal change in a very adverse way," he told the House of Commons on June 28, 2005.
It was the last passionate moment of debate on a landmark bill that would see Canada become one of the first countries in the world to legalize gay weddings.
"I see things that have been expressed before that could come down the pike, things like polygamy and others, while hiding behind the Charter of Rights and Freedoms," Lukiwski is recorded as saying in the official Hansard transcript. "I am fearful that societal change could happen."
I think that it is obvious what his true view is regarding gay rights. The question is should he resign? As much as I hate to support him, especially since I’m not a Conservative myself, but his opinion does reflect some people in the general public. Should we expect that everyone in the government reflects the views that would seem equable to all? Probably not! Plus being in the conservative government, are we truly surprised that such a comment came out from one of their own? Probably not!
