The Laramie Project

Unfortunately if you don't have tickets now you won't be able to see this fantastic play at Leigha Lee Browne Theatre on the UofT Scarborough campus, as tickets are sold out for all their shows. The Laramie Project is a play by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project about the reaction to the 1998 murder of University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming. The murder is widely considered to be a hate crime motivated by homophobia.
The cast, all university students, along with a good script were able to bring to life the various personalities, the range of feelings and emotions of the people of Laramie. The play approximately 1 1/2 hours with a 20 minutes intermission, carefully portray the various opinions of the town with out making you think that only such views could be seen in a small town, but could be viewed anywhere. The show gives you an insight to what led up to and after the horrible death of Matthew Shepard. How beyond Matthew's family and close friends, that it affected others.
If you ever get a chance to see this play at one of it's other tour dates or if it comes back to the University, I highly recommend you go. Not only does it support new young talent, but it tells a good story about a true even.

I saw this play a few years ago in Toronto. It is excellent. There is also a cable movie that came out a few years ago.
